 How to get rid of old computers and electronics
Why Recycle Electronics?
- Electronics contain metals, plastic, and a few toxics that should be reclaimed rather than put in the landfill.
- Recycling your computer or TV is one of the things you can do to help reduce the need for raw materials, and slow mining and drilling activity.
- Reuse creates 100 times more jobs per ton than landfilling electronics as trash, and recycling creates 10 times more jobs per ton.
- Sometimes electronics can be reused for parts or resold to folks who don't need the latest and greatest.

What happens to the electronics that are recycled through GUVSWD?
- Some will be refurbished and sold through charitable thrift stores.
- Some parts will be removed to be reused.
- The rest will be broken down into each different constituent (black plastic, white plastic, copper, glass, leaded glass, wire, circuit boards for, precious metals, etc.) and recycled.
- Our recycler, Good Point Recycling is in the business to do the right thing. They work very hard to keep recycling costs low while maintaining very high standards for the environmental and social implications of what they do.
Why do we charge a fee?
- Because recycling costs money--all the collection, transportation, demanufacturing, and material recovery that goes into it--we have to charge something to help offset the cost.
- We try to keep the cost nearly as low as the cost for trashing it.

GUVSWD's on-going collection
We collect computers on an on-going basis at our offices in North Hartland. A fee of $10 per system, plus $5 additional for printers applies. Please call us before coming to be sure that one of our small staff will be here to take your computer (296-3688). This service is for District residents ONLY. This is a subsidized program and unfortunately we cannot take computers from outside of our ten Member Towns at this time. What we accept through our program:
- Computers including all peripherals
- Monitors
- Fax machines, scanners, printers, etc.
- Cell phones
- Televisions
