  • All District Residents:
    All District residents are welcome to use the Hartford Recycling Center (HRC) for recycling and trash disposal.
    Click here for a list of what is recyclable, directions, and other information about HRC.
    Trash: The HRC uses a coupon system to pay for disposal. You must have a car windshield sticker and purchase coupons from a town clerk, from our offices, or at the pay station in order to drop off trash.

    Recycling: Recycling is free at the HRC once you have obtained a windshield permit from your town clerk or from our offices.


    Bridgewater Residents:
    The Town of Bridgewater engages A.B.L.E. Waste Management to provide recycling and trash drop-off services. Service provider, fees, and sorts subject to change.

    Fast Trash, Saturdays: 8 AM to 11 AM
    Bridgewater Town Garage

    Trash: $3.50 per 30 lbs bag. Excess weight subject to a $0.10 per lb charge.

    Recyclable: The town of Bridgwater pays the cost of recycling for Bridgewater residents. Non-Bridgewater residents using this facility will pay $1.00 ber bin/bag. Accepted materials include:

  • Glass containers, all tin and aluminum containers, aluminum foil, #1 and #2 plastics: These products must be clean, and have no caps.
  • Newspapers, magazines, phone books (in summer months only) and all paper products not containing metal or plastics: These products have to be in paper bags or cardboard boxes, no plastic bags.
  • Cardboard: All types, must be broken down.
  • Scrap Metal: 50 lbs per customer per week of light iron and flat metal, in links less than 8 feet long and up to 5 inches thick, no charge.
    No containers containing oil, brake fluid, or petroleum products allowed. No light bulbs. Hardcover books are not recyclable at this time. Plastic bags go back to store.

    Miscellaneous Items accepted for a fee:

  • "Big Trash": Items too large to be taken with regular trash collection--furniture, chairs, sofas, mattresses, TVs, big toys, etc. 100 lb limit applies. Cost: $5 to $30 depending on size/weight.
  • Appliances without Freon: Start at $5 (includes dishwashers, washers, dryers, stoves, gas grills without tanks, etc.)
  • Appliances with Freon: Start at $15 each (includes refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, etc.)
  • Tires: 14-inch and under $4 each, 15-inch to 19.5-inch $5 each.
  • Batteries: Car $3 each, regular alkaline batteries (AAA˙ãD) go in household trash if made after 1996.

    Trash: Purchase dump stickers and trash cards ($30 for 10 bags' worth, subject to change) in advance at the Town Clerk's, downstairs in Tracy Hall. Single bag coupons are $3.50 each.

    Recyclable: No charge. ZERO-SORT RECYCLING
    (All items must be clean and dry) Acceptable: Cardboard: Cereal boxes, pasta boxes, shoe boxes. Paper: Newspapers, junk mail, envelopes, catalogs, soft cover books, telephone books, brown bags, magazines and inserts. Plastic: Containers #1 - #7 Glass: Bottles and containers (any sort) Cans: Aluminum, tin, steel containers (pie plates/trays/foil)
    Not Acceptable: Window glass, mirrors and light bulbs Dishes, Pyrex, ceramics, juice boxes Foam packaging, styrofoam, plastic bags Recyclables containing food waste, paint or oils or Hazardous material or universal waste.

    The Town of Strafford runs a recycling center, and engages Durkee's Rubbish to provide a Fast Trash.
    Trash: Saturdays, 9:00 AM till 12 Noon at the South Strafford Fire Station, Route 132.

    Recyclable: At the town sand pile in So. Strafford, Rte 132. No charge. Accepted materials include:

  • Tin & aluminum cans, #1 and #2 plastic bottles, glass food and beverage containers,
  • Newspaper, writing paper, junk mail (no plastic parts), magazines, catalogs, boxboard,
  • Corrugated cardboard, and
  • Packing peanuts.
    Please ask for sorting instructions.

    Strafford Alternatives:

  • Thetford Residents:
    The Town of Thetford runs a recycling center and Fast Trash at their facility.

    Residents must obtain a sticker for their vehicle from the Town Clerk before using the facility (785-2922). Open: Mon 6-8pm, Tues-Thurs 8:30-3:30.

    Trash: Trash tickets for use at the Thetford Recycling Center may be purchased in either of the following ways:

    1. $4.85 per ticket during business hours at the Thetford Center Village Store
    2. $4.85 per ticket by mail from Northeast Waste Services. Send checks payable to

    Recyclable: No charge. Accepted in 4 categories:

  • Metal: Scrap metal.
  • Glass: Any colored glass, porcelain, Pyrex, ceramics, mirrors, drinking glasses, window panes (no frames).
  • "Anything that Rips:" Brown paper bags, boxboard, paper egg cartons, fax paper, newsprint, glossy, most paper, envelopes, corrugated cardboard.
  • Plastic & Tin: #1 & #2 plastic bottles, steel, tin, or aluminum food & beverage containers, NO plastic tubs (like yogurt or margarine).

    Items still functional and in good shape (small electrical appliances, tools, toys, books) can be left for others to pick up and use. NO CLOTHING, FURNITURE, or BROKEN ITEMS will be accepted, as the Town of Thetford must pay to dispose of anything that does not find a home.

  • Vershire Residents:
    Vershire provides curbside trash removal every week, and a recycling drop-off the first and third Saturdays of every month.
    Trash: Wednesdays from 8:00am along designated roads and at appointed sites. A map of trash collection routes and sites is available from the Town Clerk (685-2227) Tues-Thurs, 8:30-3:00. All trash must be contained in bags supplied by the Town of Vershire, which may be purchased at the Town Office during regular business hours. To avoid animal disruption of trash, please do not leave your trash out overnight. You are responsible for cleaning up any trash left around collection sites and for removing trash not properly bagged.

    Recyclable: At the Town Center parking lot the first and third Saturdays of each month, from 9:00 AM till 12:00 Noon. No charge. The following materials are collected for recycling: mixed paper, magazines, newspaper, phonebooks, corrugated cardboard, boxboard, metal cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles #1 and #2. Please ask attendant for sorting requirements.

  • West Fairlee Residents:
    The Town of West Fairlee engages Northeast Waste (295-2660) to provide recycling and Fast Trash Services.

    Behind the Community Building

    Trash: $3 per bag or as per size/weight.

    Recyclable: No charge. Accepted materials include:

  • Plastics - all plastic bottles. "Check the Neck"-- if the neck is smaller than the base, recycle it.
  • Cans - any tin, aluminum, and steel food and beverage containers.
  • Glass - any color food and beverage containers (labels OK)
  • Newsprint - includes all glossy inserts.
  • Mixed paper - junk mail, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, file folders, paperback books, school and office papers.
  • Corrugated Cardboard is separate: Clean, dry, flattened corrugated cardboard, and brown paper bags.

    West Fairlee Alternatives:

  • Woodstock Residents:
    The Town does not own or operate their own transfer station or recycling center, but a commercial service provides service to many town residents and businesses:

    Recycle: Through the Hartford Recycling Center.

    Woodstock Alternatives:
