Event Information
Information on what we can take at each particular type of event:
Big Trash
What: Bulky trash items that cannot be taken by your regular trash collection. Furniture, carpeting, sofas, big toys, mattresses, TVs, etc. (Please consider recycling your TV instead of trashing it, see our electronics recycling program.) 150 pound limit applies.
Cost: $3 to $20 per item by size/weight.
Other Options: Hartford Recycling Center accepts bulky waste year-round. Residents of Bridgewater, Strafford, Thetford, and West Fairlee may be able to use their town's facility. Or ask your commercial waste hauler about service.
Books
What: Any hard or soft cover books. Will be recycled. No need to sort by type.
NO wet or mildewed books, please.
Cost: No charge.
Other Options: Check with your local library or used book store first to see if they would like your books.
Clothing
What: Any season clothing, bedding, belts, linens, shoes. Summer clothes especially valuable. Small tears, missing buttons, or stains acceptable. Clothing must be clean and dry. Please pair together all shoes by tying laces or using a rubber band. Please bring in clothing in sturdy plastic bags.
Cost: No charge.
Other Options: Please consider giving high quality clothes to local thrift stores.
Besides our events, a non-profit thrift store has put together a parallel recycling service. Any clothing that they do not re-sell goes to the recycling company that we use too. So, we encourage people to bring their clothing to SEVCA at the Good Buy Store at the Hartford recycling center (no windshield sticker needed to visit SEVCA), or downtown WRJ. They will look for any locally-resellable clothes, and recycle the rest.
Compost Bin Sales:
What: Composting at home is one of the best things you can do to reduce your trash (Composting Your Garbage). We are selling the "Earth Machine" bins again this year. Ongoing sale at the GUVSWD office (see Compost Bins).
Cost: Low price of $37 to District residents, $48 to out-of-district folks.
Another Option: We also sell $8 bins for collecting the food waste in your kitchen.
Another Option: Build your own bin. we have information to help, call us.
Electronics
What: All parts of the computer including monitor, tower, keyboard, mouse, wires and cables, and printers. Also TVs, faxes, phones, other office electronics. Will be refurbished or recycled.
Cost: Complete computer system $10 fee, printers are separate with a $5 fee each. Fees subject to change.
Other Options: Computers also accepted year-round at GUVSWD offices (see Recycling Computers), please call ahead.
Fluorescent Light Bulbs
What: Straight fluorescent light tubes, swirled or straight compact fluorescent bulbs, high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs.
Cost: No charge.
Other Options: Bring them to our offices during business hours (see Year-Round Services)
Hazardous Waste Collections
Please see our page on our Hazardous Waste Program for details.
What: Residents and small businesses can drop off hazardous waste.
Cost: No charge to residents. Disposal costs only to businesses and municipalities, who must pre-register by calling GUVSWD: Contact Us. Pesticide disposal free due to grant funding.
Scrap Metal
What: Anything mostly metal (90% or more), including appliances. All engines and tanks MUST be drained of oil, gasoline and other fluids. Please no cars or large farm equipment.
Cost: No charge; any refrigerant removal is also paid for by GUVSWD.
Other Options: Hartford Recycling Center accepts scrap metal year-round (except appliances with refrigerant, e.g. fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers, A/C units). Residents of Bridgewater, Norwich, and Thetford can use their town's facility. Woodstock Recycling and Refuse customers can use their facility.
Used Motor Oil
What: Used motor oil only. Must be free of antifreeze, water, or other fluids (other fluids and mixtures can be taken to a Hazardous Waste collection). Please bring it in a container you can drop off, because we will be taking the container, not pouring the oil off.
Cost: No charge.
Other Options: Hartford Recycling Center accepts used motor oil year-round. Residents of Norwich can use their town's facility. Some auto service centers accept used oil to fuel their heating furnace, ask your local mechanic.
Tires
What: Passenger tires, light truck tires, truck tires, tractor and loader tires. Rims accepted (except on large tires) for an increased fee.
Cost: Passenger vehicle tires (indicated with a "P" in the size code) @ $2 feeLight truck/SUV tires (indicated with a "LT" in the size code) @ $3 fee. Rims double the price. Larger tire fees as quoted, Contact Us.
Other Options: Many commercial tire centers accept tires, click here for a list. Hartford Recycling Center accepts tires year-round. Residents of Bridgewater and Norwich can use their town's facility.
